PORTRAITS FROM CAIRO
SQUASH// 2020
In late September I was commissioned by the PSA to photograph the top 16 players at the World Squash Tour Finals in Cairo. Squash is a global sport however 8 of the top 16 players in the world are Egyptian, years ago it used to Britain...
So what has changed? In the past squash was considered an elitist sport which probably made it difficult for grass roots players to develop. But times have changed and squash has become more accessible for the masses with lots of training academies and street squash programs. In particular Egypt has had a really successful street squash program which is now showing fruition. Squash in Egypt currently sits alongside football as its national sport, squash players, like footballers, are treated as superstars.
